A bottomless chair, a heavy rope: The torture scene at an old barge in “Casino Royale” is unnerving. The barge is a real place – and we found it at the outskirts of Prague!
Why Bond was here
Easy: Because he gets captured, beaten and abducted. James Bond is in Montenegro to uncover the doings of underground bankier Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen). The baddie realizes that and baits James Bond (Daniel Craig) with the help of double-sided love interest Vesper Lynd (Eva Green). Then Bond is tied up and brought to an empty barge. There, Le Chiffre tortues the stripped-naked agent with a heavy mooring rope. It is quite an itchy scene.
How you gonna get there
The scene inside the barge is a studio set. But the harbour is real. It is not in Montenegro, but part of Prague in the Czech Republic. The harbour is at a little stretch at an Moldova island north of Prague, close to the Prague Zoo.
Firstly, head to Podbada station, reachable with both trams or the Prague commuter S4. A ride from the main station is roughly 20 minutes. Then you got to walk your way east to a little connecting bridge. The island is not easily accessible, nut actually home to the city’s central wastewater treatment plant. Once at the island, find your way to the northern-most tip and head to the western shore. There you’ll find the quay wall, still with anchoring ships and barges.
Good to know
Well, it smells. As the island is a wastewater treatment plant, there are certain fumes in the air. Thus, this Bond location is not your typical golden-sands beach or your five-star hotel. But entering the area, especially at dusk, has a certain espionage vibe. The Barges at the quay look a lot like the ones in “Casino Royale”, even years after filming. Fortunately you can enter them – and look for your own torture ropes?
Can’t get enough of wastewater plants? Then head to “Staré čistírny”, the historical wastewater plant turned cultural venue/restaurant/event location right at the other side of the island. The location has eerie tunnels with early 20th century state-of-the-art sewage technology – and was a movie location of “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” in 2010.
