A postcard from a Russian secretary invites James Bond into a love scheme – with honeymoon-esque locations in Turkey, Italy and along the Orient Express. And add some Scotland and Greece to spice it up!
Istanbul is of one of Ian Flemings most adored cities, a vibrant bridge betweeen orient and occident. So it is no wonder, he turned the Bosporus hub into a major location in “From Russia With Love”. Russia itself doesn’t play a part. As it also isn’t the Russians who try to get 007. Next, a rushing train ride through the Balkans connects Istanbul with Venice, where 007 finally uncovers the movies villains.
Here are all From Russia With Love movie locations in Istanbul and Venice:
TURKEY
James Bond arrives at the Atatürk Airport and drives into the city. The Rolls Royce passes Sultanahmet at the entry to Gülhane Park. Bonds rendezvous-point with Tatiana Romanova is inside the famous Hagia Sophia, Karim Bey’s underground network is the Basilica Cistern right next to it. His office though is hidden between the narrow alleys of Kapalı Çarşı the Grand Bazaar. In “Skyfall”, Bond revisits the bazaar – and its rooftop.
The attack on the Russian Embassy was filmed at Halaskargazi Road in the northern parts of Istanbul. The shooting of Krilencu is at Kalenderhane. Tatiana is about to meet Rosa Klebb nearby the Sebsefa Hatun Mosque. The lovers leave Istanbul with the Orient Express at Sirkeci Station.
GREECE
When SPECTRE is planning its coup, a yacht is briefly visible as the organizations headquarter. The yacht is not at a random location, but anchoring at the Mykonos new port in Greece.
CROATIA AND SERBIA
Both Zagreb and Belgrade are places, where the Orient Express stops. But filming didn’t took place at those trainstations. The crew used different parts of the Sirkeci train station in Istanbul instead – the same station, the departure of the Orient Express was filmed.
UNITED KINGDOM
When Bond and Tatiana Romanova try to escape SPECTRE in the Adriatic Sea, it all was filmed back home in Scotland. The filming crew secured production fundings this way. The water pursuit is filmed at Loch Craignish and Craobh. The hide and seek, Bond plays with the helicopter is at Leckuary Hills. A small scene with Bonds old love interest Sylvia Trench is filmed at Hurley close to London. And Heatherden Hall at the Pinewood Studios is the SPECTRE headquarter, where Red Grant trains to kill Bond.
ITALY
After escaping SPECTRE, at least for a bit, the lovebirds arrive at the Venice laguna and check in at famous Danieli Hotel. The room is a movie set back in Pinewood though – it is in “Moonraker”, that Bond actually visits one of the famous rooms.
