At the Banks of Moyka

RUSSIA – Moyka Canal in St. Petersburg // GoldenEye (1995)

Wrecking havoc seems one of Bonds famous activities. Right in the heart of historical St.
Petersburg he shows off his talent by driving a tank through a house or two.

Why Bond was here
The terrorist organization Janus steals a stealth helicopter and blows up a Soviet base up in Siberia. Bond (Pierce Brosnan) travels to St. Petersburg, where the presumed headquarter of Janus is. He encounters renegade General Ourumov (Gottfried John) – and tries to hunt him down with a stolen tank. As a chase goes on, Bond wrecks havoc in downtown St. Petersburg – driving the tank along the banks of Moyka Canal.

How you gonna get there
The tank chase had been filmed at two areas in the heart of the city: At the banks of Moyka Canal and on different streets in the Sennaya neighborhood (here you can read more about that part).
The Moyka part had been filmed quite tricky. It looks, like Bond drives his tank over a long distance – but in fact the scenes had been filmed with different angles at one small road only. Its the northern part of the Moyka embankment between the streets Moshkov Pereulok and Naberezhnaya Zimney Kanavki. Additional filming took place at the Bol’shoy Konyushennyy Bridge. It’s the one, Ourumov escapes on with his car.

Good to know
There is a great restaurant just at the corner of Moshkov Pereulok and the Moyka river. It is called Chayki Bar – and is fusion between Italian cuisine, hipster interior and Russian bar. Go there for a nice lunch or an evening celebration! You’ll recognize the Chayki Bar by its logo outside, a sea gull.

The beautiful and majestic Hermitage is just a short stroll away. Just follow the river westwards and you will enter the Palace Square with the General Staff Building and the Winter Palace. We visited the Hermitage on a Friday evening. It’s the perfect time: All the tourists are gone and you have the museum for yourself.
