CZECH REPUBLIC – Ústí nad Orlicí & Prague, Úholičky Train Station // Casino Royale (2006)

A beautiful train ride from Switzerland to Montenegro? All filmed in the Czech Republic! The crew of “Casino Royale” knew, how to trick the audience.

Why Bond was here
After underworld banker Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen) gambled away his clients money, he desperatly needs new cash – and starts a poker game in Montenegro. James Bond (Daniel Craig) is up to grab the pot, 150 million US-Dollar, in hope to bankrupt Le Chiffre and bringing him into the fangs of MI6. 007 gets help (and government money) from Vesper Lynd (Eva Green). Both travel via train to Montenegro, passing the fictional Swiss train station “Chur Ost”.

The train to Montenegro…

How you gonna get there
Two exterior scenes show the train ride – but noch through Switzerland and Montenegro, but the Czech train network. The station “Chur Ost” doesn’t exist in reality. It is Úholičky Train Station north of Prague. Both the regional Czech train and the Prague commuter S4 serve this station. A ride from the main station is roughly 30 minutes. Be sure to check, if there is a return train schedules soon, as there is not much to do at Úholičky.

The other exterior scene is in Bohemia in eastern Czech Republic, close to Ústí nad Orlicí. You need to grab a regional Czech train to Ústí nad Orlicí and then head north along the railways for about an hour. At a quite valley, enclosed with conifer forests, you get to s-shaped rail tracks. This is, where the train is supposed to run through Montenegro.

Good to know
Both Slovak Rail and the Czech Leo Express connect Prague and Ústí nad Orlicí. The train runs for about 1,5 hours in one direction. So getting there, walking for two hours and return is a good half-day trip. Be sure to grab supplies, as there is no restaurant or café at the train station in Ústí nad Orlicí, but just a vending machine. There is a little supermarket at the nearby village, though with very limited business hours. Also Úholičky is a very tranquill suburb of Prague with nothing much to see – besides a nice view at Moldova river from the banks.
The Czech train locations are not the only fake locations from Montenegro. Also Bond’s hotel and the “Casino Royale” itself are not in Montenegro, but at Karlovy Vary east of Prague. Check out the location finds right here.

I visited both places in november, with heavy snowfall kicking in at the day of my hike. This gave the search for the right location in Bohemia a nice winter vibe and a very pleasant quiteness. A small river runs along the railway, nothing but the sound of snowfall and crunching snow under my shoes in the air. The Czech train locations might be dull, but getting there wasn’t.
