A View and a Chill

SARDINIA – Costa Smeralda // The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

On the route from Olbia to Porto Cervo is a spot, where you can see the gorgeous Costa Smeralda in all its beauty. Sure, Bond had been here before.

Why Bond was here
James Bond (Roger Moore) and his Russian partner agent Triple X (Barbara Bach) head to Sardinia to follow the trails of marine megalomaniac Karl Stromberg (Kurt Jürgens). The evil-doer had hijacked British and Russian submarines – and wants to start a nuclear war with them. When Bond and Triple X are on his trails, Stromberg sends out his henchmen – the agents escape in a white Lotus Esprit.

How you gonna get there
The car chase had been filmed at numerous places across northern Sardinia – from Cala Dragunara in the west to the quaint village San Pantaleo in the east. At one spot, the Lotus Esprit and an ensuing helicopter play catch at a view point overlooking the beautiful Costa Smeralda.
That point is a parking spot along road 94 that leads from Olbia to Porto Cervo. The only point to reach it is via car – rental locations are at Olbia airport or the city center.

Good to know
The spot has only one thing to offer – but that alone is magnificent: the view! Get there to take a look at the turquoise waters and white beaches of Costa Smeralda. The coastline stretches just below your feet as you stand at the cliff. With that view one easily understands why philanthropist Aga Khan grabbed some money back in the 1960s to turn this silent area into what is now the thriving Emerald Coast.

Make this an early location – so you can stand at the view point and enjoy your first impression from the beautiful Costa Smeralda with its white beaches and turquoise waters. Then breath in, relax and head down to one of the sandy beaches. We recommend Capriccioli, where the Lotus emerges, of course.
