The Gladiator’s Grave

ITALY – Rome, Colosseum // Spectre (2015)

The Colosseum in Rome is one of the main tourist attractions. But what to see after the visit? Hip and urban Monti is just around the corner!

Why Bond was here
After the death of M in “Skyfall”, James Bond (Daniel Craig) travels to Rome to uncover a sinister organization called “SPECTRE”. He arrives in style: passing by the famous Colosseum in his Aston Martin DB10.

How you gonna get there
It is a pretty hard task not to find the Colosseum in Rome – but here you go: The blue metroline B has a stop directly at the landmark, connecting it to the central hub “Termini”. Also numerous buses stop in front of the Colosseum.
You can also just walk. The Colosseum is part of Centro Storico, the historic city center of Rome. Head from Piazza Venezia further east along the Via dei Fori Imperiali or through the magnificent Forum Romanum!

Good to know
In “Spectre” the Colosseum can be seen only briefly. Filming took place on Via Celio Vibenna directly south of the gladiator’s grave. From there, the Arch of Constantine is also visible.

Come early to visit the place, best shortly after sunrise – because as one of Rome’s main attractions it woos a lot of tourists every day. And so queres get long soon. After the visit best walk north for the urban and bohemian neighborhood Monti. There is a little park directly next to the Colosseum and right across Monti starts.
Monti has a lot of boutiques, cafés and hip bars – you’ll find food and drinks for every occasion and time of the day. The later the better, as Monti comes to life slowly. Don’t forget to check out “Mercato Monti”, a pop up market for local designers, that collects gems and unique clothes from the area – and offers the Italian coffee you adore so much.

We suggest: Come to Monti late afternoon! When the sun sets, golden rays fill the streets and as you wander the area, you’ll get a glimpse of the Colosseum from time to time between the buildings. Seeing the thousand year old home of terror from that perspective really lets you understand, how history packed Rome actually is.
