UNITED KINGDOM – London, Vauxhall MI6 Building // the Brosnan and Craig films
The MI6 has its headquarters at Vauxhall. So Bond visits the characteristic building in numerous films – to the enjoyment of the real MI6 agents.
Why Bond was here
Even an agent with a killing license has to spend a day or two at the office. And the MI6 Building at Vauxhall – well it is James Bonds office. The characteristic building is the real headquarter of the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS). Thus it also is home to the secret 00-section in numerous Bond films.
How you gonna get there
The MI6 Building is situated in the south western part of London, along the Albert Embankment on the banks of the river Thames. You can either take the tube to Vauxhall station or walk your way south from Westminster and then cross Vauxhall bridge for the best view.
Be carefull: As the MI6 Building is home to the secrets of the world, you actually shouldn’t take photos. Or at least don’t get caught taking some. Be as spyish as possible.
Good to know
The old MI6 had it’s headquarters near Waterloo and didn’t move into the new building at Vauxhall until 1994. So it only can be seen in movies from the Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig eras. Those are: “Goldeneye” (1995), “The World Is Not Enough” (1999), “Die Another Day” (2002), “Skyfall” (2012) and “Spectre” (2015).
Housing secret intelligence doesn’t come easy in the Bond world: The building gets attacked in both “The World Is Not Enough” and “Skyfall” – and finally destroyed in “Spectre”. It is set to be demolished, when Blofeld places explosives inside and plays a game of hide and seek with Bond and his love interest Madeleine Swann at the end of the movie.
The real agents at MI6 loved the virtual demolition. A special premiere of “Skyfall” was held at Vauxhall Cross for the MI6 staff – and they cheered when their headquarters was destroyed in the film.
As the MI6 Building is top secret, there is nothing much to do around. Except you’re a spy… We enjoyed the view from Vauxhall bridge and then took a stroll up north at Millbank. From there you can excess the small Victoria Tower gardens next to the Parliament and move on to the famous Westminster Abbey and then to Westminster Bridge – where new Bond locations await you.
