THAILAND – Bangkok, Sinn Sathorn Tower // Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)
Sinn Sathorn Tower in Bangkok is the real Saigon Headquarter from Elliot Carver in “Tomorrow Never Dies”. The neighborhood is worth a visit!
Why Bond was here
Media megalomaniac Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) wants to orchestrate a war between China and the UK – and profit from the coverage. So James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) travels to Vietnam to thwart his plans. He gets help from Chinese agent Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh) – but both get captured. They are brought to Carvers media center for South East Asia, a skyscraper in Ho-Chi-Minh-City with a gigantic poster of Carvers likeness outside the facade. Bond and Wai Lin can escape using the poster Erol-Flynn-Style and rappeled themselves to the ground.
How you gonna get there
The skyscraper is not actually in Ho-Chi-Minh-City – or Saigon – but in Thailand’s capital Bangkok. It is the Sinn Sathorn Tower in southern district Thonburi. The facade got slightly CGIed for the action, but you will still recognize the building. The Sinn Sathorn Tower is situated between the metro stations Krung Thon Buri and Wongwian Yai – just take the dark green BTS Silom line from Bangkok’s city center towards Bang Wa. The better station to exit is Wongwian Yai, as you can then walk along Mana Witthaya Street towards the Sinn Sathorn Tower – gaining the same view like in the movie.
Good to know
Thonburi develops fast into an upcoming area of Bangkok. The district is home to many Asian expats doing business in Thailand – so the streets fill with coffee joints and start-ups, but still inherit traditional handcraft stores and cafés alike. Check out “The Clock Out” for some creative Asian Europan Fusion kitchen if you come by in the evening – or the beautiful little café “Taste of Trees” for breakfast or a coffee break.
We combined your trip to Thonburi with two other Bond locations nearby: Head out further west for Khlong Dan – the river canal is the action spot of the boat chase in “The Man With The Golden Gun”. Or go up north for Chang Nak Alley – where the bike chase after the escape from Sinn Sathorn Tower was filmed.
