AUSTRIA – Feldkirch // Quantum of Solace (2008)
Feldkirch was the stand-in for Bregenz. Quite a good choice: Back in the days even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle fell in love with the little town!
Why Bond was here
James Bond (Daniel Craig) picks up loose ends from Casino Royale and a sinister organization called “Quantum” comes in his way. In Bregenz, an Austrian town at the eastern tip of Lake Constance, “Quantum” has a secret meeting – that Bond crashes. The villains come together at a modern opera house at the sea shore, the Seebühne Bregenz, during a play of “Tosca”. Before the start of the opera, Bond arrives at the city center – which was filmed in Feldkirch instead of Bregenz.
How you gonna get there
Feldkirch is just about 30 kilometers south of Bregenz. You can easily reach it within 30 minutes via car or train. As the small town is a beloved halt for mountainbikers, travelers and wanderers – better opt for the train as parking spaces can get crowded at weekends. Check out the Austrian train service ÖBB for time tables.
The scene where Bond arrives at the town late at night had been filmed in the heart of the old town, at the junction of Marktgasse and Schmiedgasse. You can easily recognize the yellow columns of Franz Unterberger book store.
Good to know
The beautiful medieval Feldkirch is an Austrian jewel. Come there on a warm summer day, to enjoy icecream and coffee at the market or a glass of wine in one of the many cafés in the narrow alleys. Stroll along Entenbachgasse to find a plaque remembering Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The Sherlock-author spend some of his juvenile years in Feldkirch and instantly fell in love with the city.
We combined our trip to Feldkirch with a night at the Bregenz opera. You should too! Staying in either Lindau or Bregenz you can easily manage to visit Feldkirch for lunch or in the afternoon and still be in time to dress up for the evening opera visit at the Seebühne Bregenz.
