Out of the Blue

SARDINIA – Spiaggia Capriccioli // The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

Sardinia is famous for its turquoise waters at the Costa Smeralda. In “The Spy Who Loved Me” Bond visits the beaches too – in his submarine Lotus Esprit.

Why Bond was here
James Bond (Roger Moore) and his Russian counterpart Triple X (Barbara Bach) head to Sardinia to follow the trails of marine megalomaniac Karl Stromberg (Kurt Jürgens). Shortly, after they have been discovered, Stromberg sends out his henchmen – with cars, motorcycles and a helicopter. Bond escapes them one by one in his waterproof Lotus Esprit – finally with jumping into the ocean. After an underwater battle with some frogmen he re-emerges with the Lotus at the sands of Spiaggia Capriccioli at Costa Smeralda.

How you gonna get there
The beach is one of Sardinia’s finest and part of the small peninsula Capricciola in the northeastern part of the Costa Smeralda.
The best option to reach it is via car. Head north from Olbia to Porto Cervo and then turn right at Capricciola. You will pass the luxury hotel Cala di Volpe – where Bonds stays in the movie – to the right. Some minutes later the road ends at a parking lot. Spiaggia Capriccioli is the Beach to the left. The other beach to the right is called Spiaggia del Pirata. Be careful: Spiaggia Capriccioli is divided into two bays. The scene with the emerging car had been filmed is the southern one. You stand at the right spot, when you see the second bay and the roof of an adjoining villa up north.

Good to know
We visited many beaches at Costa Smeralda and other areas of Sardinia – but the Spiaggia Capriccioli stands out as a jewel. Fine white sands, a small bay that is not that crowded on weekdays and a sandy entry into the turquoise water make this beach really pleasant.
There is a small kiosk and a restaurant nearby. And of course the Cala di Volpe, if you fancy some exclusive dining.

We enjoyed the beach a couple of days in a row as it is one of the most beautiful and remote along the Costa Smeralda. It is definitely a good idea to travel in Sardinia in the low season, not only the prices are significantly lower, but also the number of tourists. Look for an accommodation a bit further in the countryside as you can enjoy a panoramic view and the cool evenings.
